Cynopsis
08/31/05

Good morning.  It's Wednesday, August 31, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, advertising spending for the first half of 2005 was up 5.7% over the same period last year, due to gains across major media. Looking first at category spending, the 10 largest categories (automotive, pharmaceutical, restaurants, wireless phone, D.R., credit card services) spent $21 billion in the first half of the year, up 5.4% over last year across all major media. Nielsen says that most product categories are up year to year, with the exception of motion pictures and department stores, both of which were down slightly. Nielsen's Product Placement tracking service shows ongoing growth in this arena with the top 10 brands in the category (Coke, Everlast, Gatorade, Toyota, Nike, Sierra Mist, Home Depot, Foot Locker, Boston Red Sox) tallying up 11,455 occurrences in primetime broadcast network television during the first six months of 2005. The top ten programs utilizing product placement were in rank order: The Contender, American Idol, Amazing Race, What I Like About You, The Apprentice, Road to Stardom, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, King of Queens, Fear Factor, and America's Next Top Model.

The first broadcast primetime premiere of the new season aired on Monday night. Fox's Prison Break won its 8-10p block with a 4.6/12 A18-49 rating, dominating that demo category for the night according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. Among M18-49, Prison Break earned a 4.7/13. While it helps that all of the other broadcast networks were in wall-to-wall repeats for the night (with the long exception of ABC with preseason football), that's still a pretty darn fine start for any new show, particularly for this time of year. Fox will re-broadcast the first two eps on Thursday.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The premiere of Rome on HBO Sunday night drew 3.8 million viewers, delivering a 9.1/13 in the HBO universe.  Comparatively speaking, that makes it the highest rated show on HBO since the premiere of Six Feet Under in June 2004 which drew a 9.4/14.

MTV's Video Music Awards pulled in more than 8 million viewers from 8-1130p on Sunday, and making it the most watched program for the week on basic cable among A18-49 for the week (see chart below).  With that said, the draw was down from 10.3 million last year.

Sundance Channel picked up a total of 21 independent films from three separate outlets - Zeitgeist Films Ltd., Palm Pictures and Strand Releasing.  All of the films will make their US debuts on Sundance.  Titles include Cowards Bend the Knee and James' Journey to Jerusalem (both from Zeitgeist); City of Men from Palm Pictures, and The Nomi Song from Strand Releasing.

BET and Wal-Mart are starting a joint venture to market BET content and branding in the megastore.  BET will provide Wal-Mart with DVDs of its programming and content connected to urban-focused music and film releases.  The DVDs will be branded as "BET Official" 2-packs and located in BET-branded areas and merchandising displays within Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB stores.  The first DVD to hit shelves under the new agreement will be from rapper/producer Kanye West with his new CD "Late Registration".

NBC has added John Leguizamo to the cast of ER as a new doctor on the team.  He will appear in at least 12 episodes this upcoming season.

MTV has ordered up additional seasons of two series: Nick Cannon Presents Wild'n Out and Date My Mom.  Wild'n Out has received its marching orders for Season #2 after just five eps into season #1, perhaps because the show is #1 in the time period among P12-34 (Thurs. at 10p).  MTV has ordered 10 eps for next season of Wild'n Out.  As for Date My Mom from Reveille, the greenlight is for Season #3 after this show also delivers the 12-34 demo for the network.

Cartoon Network has ordered 13 episodes of a new comedy project (as yet untitled) from Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, aka the other guy of music duo Outkast. Benjamin has been developing this project together with creator/producer Tommy Lynch Co. and Moxie Turtle, according to Variety.  The story is about a group of young musically gifted kids and the person who inspires them.  Cartoon is looking at a Fall 2006 premiere.

Fox has ordered a script for a project based on the Dirty Harry film franchise, currently titled McCabe from Wonderland Vision & Sound and Warner Bros. TV.  According to Variety, the story is about a school teacher who becomes a cop so he can go after his wife's murderer.  Writer John Glenn will pen and exec produce the script.

Correction :  USA Network's drama project Psyche is from writer Steve Franks and Tagline Pictures.  Steve was misidentified in yesterday's edition.

presents This Day in History:
1997-Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in Paris' Pitie-Salpetiere Hospital after suffering massive chest injuries in an early morning car accident.  Her companion, Dodi Fayed, was killed instantly in the 12:25 a.m. crash, as was driver Henri Paul, who was drunk and lost control of the Mercedes in a highway underpass.  He was driving at excessive speeds in a reckless attempt to escape paparazzi photographers.  Diana's bodyguard, Trevor Rees Jones, the only one wearing a seatbelt, escaped with serious but nonfatal injuries.  The death of Diana, beloved by millions for her beauty and good nature, plunged the world into mourning.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The N has signed a development deal with writer/director and former teen actor Ralph Macchio.  This time around Macchio, who is best known as the kid in the Karate Kid Movies, will work behind the scenes as the as creator of new teen drama about two runaway girls.  Macchio will also be part of Warner Home Video's new DVD release (September 20) of The Outsiders-The Complete Novel, director Francis Ford Coppola's new version of his 1983 film adaptation of the renowned S.E. Hinton book, starring Macchio and several other notables.

Andre Benjamin, better known as Andre 3000 one of the duo that makes up the music group OutKast, has gotten the go ahead for 13 episodes of an untitled omedy project he has been developing with creator/producer Tommy Lynch Co., Moxie Turtle and Cartoon Network, per Variety.  Benjamin and Lynch will executive produce the series.  The series was originally being developed for the network's Adult Swim block.  Benjamin also has a development deal with Nick Movies for a project called The Hit, about a fifth grader looking for a new wife for his dad, as well as an agreement with MTV to develop projects.

In the category of "about kids and not for kids" comes CABLEready's newest reality show House Of Babies, which has been picked up in a pre-production sale to the U.S.' Discovery Health Channel and the UK's LIVINGtv (Flextech Television).  The 26x30 series will give its viewers a look at one of the busiest midwifery birth centers (Miami Maternity Center) and the interactions between all those involved in the birthing process (parents, midwives and students). The indie producers behind the project are St. Paul, MN-based Bosch Media and Fargo, ND-based Video Arts Studios.  House of Babies is scheduled to debut on both networks in the first quarter of 2006.  International School of Midwifery founder, Shari Daniels, will serve as a partial narrator connecting each episode's particular story.  In addition to being dubbed the "mother of modern-day midwifery," Shari also supplies the maternity center with student midwives from her school.

Teen targeted network, The N will air three feature films during September beginning with what the network is calling the Brad Who? Movie Weekend, on Friday, September 2 at 8p, which will feature two movies both starring Jennifer Aniston, Picture Perfect (1997) immediately followed by The Object of My Affection (1998).  Later in the month The N will feature Clueless (1995) on Saturday, September 17, 8p.  All three movies are making their network premiere on The N.

The tween/teen targeted anime series Naruto will make its Cartoon Network premiere as part of Cartoon's Toonami block, on September 10 at 9p.  The debut of the Naruto on Cartoon Network marks the first time the show will be seen in English.  Co-produced by Shueisha, Inc., Pierrot Co., Ltd. and TV Tokyo, Naruto debuted in Japan in October 2002 on TV Tokyo.  Earlier this year TV Tokyo Corporation and Shueisha Inc. named ShoPro Entertainment as the master licensor for Naruto in North America and Latin America.  ShoPro Entertainment is handling the TV, home video and merchandising rights for the ninja property in those regions.

Elsewhere Naruto will make its Canadian premiere on YTV, September 16, 2005, 9:30p.  Naruto is the third series from VIZ Media to debut on YTV this year.  Raised as an orphan and with no one believing in him and shunned by the villagers, Naruto is now a teenager who wants to earn respect and become the Hokage, top ninja, in his village.  But, Naruto has a secret that even he doesn't knows about.  As an infant, he became the receptacle for an evil spirit, which remains sealed within him.  For fear that Naruto would abuse the dormant powers within him, an edict was made that forbade anyone from telling him about the demon.  Thus, Naruto continues to train and develops on his voyage to become the best ninja.

Little Einsteins (produced by Curious Pictures), a new preschool TV series, launches on Disney Channel with a primetime presentation Sunday, October 9, 7:30p.  Beginning the next day, Monday, October 10, the series will air in its regular timeslot, daily at 8a during Playhouse Disney.  The Little Einsteins series takes young viewers on adventures around the world to introduce them to nature, world cultures, and enjoyment of the arts.   The series uses a combination of live-action images of nature, art and landmarks with 2D character animation.  Developed by The Baby Einstein Company, Playhouse Disney and a team of children's TV experts including series Exec. Prod. Eric Weiner (JoJo's Circus, Dora the Explorer), Dr. Valeria Lovelace (Dora the Explorer, former head of research for Sesame Street) as the curriculum advisor, and Cordelia Bergamo, who teaches classical music to preschoolers, as the musical advisor.

www.Jetix.tv/SuperPicks ) and vote for their favorite hero, which includes the ability to unlock a preview of Get Ed.
