08/31/05
Good morning. It's Wednesday, August 31, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, advertising spending for the first half of 2005 was up 5.7% over the same period last year, due to gains across major media. Looking first at category spending, the 10 largest categories (automotive, pharmaceutical, restaurants, wireless phone, D.R., credit card services) spent $21 billion in the first half of the year, up 5.4% over last year across all major media. Nielsen says that most product categories are up year to year, with the exception of motion pictures and department stores, both of which were down slightly. Nielsen's Product Placement tracking service shows ongoing growth in this arena with the top 10 brands in the category (Coke, Everlast, Gatorade, Toyota, Nike, Sierra Mist, Home Depot, Foot Locker, Boston Red Sox) tallying up 11,455 occurrences in primetime broadcast network television during the first six months of 2005. The top ten programs utilizing product placement were in rank order: The Contender, American Idol, Amazing Race, What I Like About You, The Apprentice, Road to Stardom, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, King of Queens, Fear Factor, and America's Next Top Model.
The first broadcast primetime premiere of the new season aired on Monday night. Fox's Prison Break won its 8-10p block with a 4.6/12 A18-49 rating, dominating that demo category for the night according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. Among M18-49, Prison Break earned a 4.7/13. While it helps that all of the other broadcast networks were in wall-to-wall repeats for the night (with the long exception of ABC with preseason football), that's still a pretty darn fine start for any new show, particularly for this time of year. Fox will re-broadcast the first two eps on Thursday.
* MORE GOOD STUFF *
The premiere of Rome on HBO Sunday night drew 3.8 million viewers, delivering a 9.1/13 in the HBO universe. Comparatively speaking, that makes it the highest rated show on HBO since the premiere of Six Feet Under in June 2004 which drew a 9.4/14.MTV's Video Music Awards pulled in more than 8 million viewers from 8-1130p on Sunday, and making it the most watched program for the week on basic cable among A18-49 for the week (see chart below). With that said, the draw was down from 10.3 million last year.
Sundance Channel picked up a total of 21 independent films from three separate outlets - Zeitgeist Films Ltd., Palm Pictures and Strand Releasing. All of the films will make their US debuts on Sundance. Titles include Cowards Bend the Knee and James' Journey to Jerusalem (both from Zeitgeist); City of Men from Palm Pictures, and The Nomi Song from Strand Releasing.
BET and Wal-Mart are starting a joint venture to market BET content and branding in the megastore. BET will provide Wal-Mart with DVDs of its programming and content connected to urban-focused music and film releases. The DVDs will be branded as "BET Official" 2-packs and located in BET-branded areas and merchandising displays within Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB stores. The first DVD to hit shelves under the new agreement will be from rapper/producer Kanye West with his new CD "Late Registration".

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1997-Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in Paris' Pitie-Salpetiere Hospital after suffering massive chest injuries in an early morning car accident. Her companion, Dodi Fayed, was killed instantly in the 12:25 a.m. crash, as was driver Henri Paul, who was drunk and lost control of the Mercedes in a highway underpass. He was driving at excessive speeds in a reckless attempt to escape paparazzi photographers. Diana's bodyguard, Trevor Rees Jones, the only one wearing a seatbelt, escaped with serious but nonfatal injuries. The death of Diana, beloved by millions for her beauty and good nature, plunged the world into mourning.
